Percussion Concert

The twice-yearly percussion concert, by the school and community college ensemble, was tonight. Normally I blip them as they are playing but tonight I chose a picture of them changing around the instruments on stage. This is a  piece of choreography in itself because so much needs to be moved both on and off stage. They rehearse this until the whole operation goes smoothly, with everyone knowing exactly what they have to do.
Here they are setting up 7 marimbas, a grand piano, a guitar, and a drum set (cunningly built on a big mat so it could be pulled on in one go), ready for 4 pieces by Frank Zappa. Later they would be an arrangement using 50 drums, and for the finale there were 7 drum sets + one Japanese wooden drum.
As always we were very impressed by the professionalism of these 16 - 21 year-olds. We talked about how much they will learn from this, even if they only play for the three years of upper school.
