Unfortunately, though the edge of the wee saved fragment matched neatly with the remainder, the restrictions on drilling work at the moment mean that it couldn't be replaced in a mechanically secure way, so the exposed end was patched and built out as much as the excellent dental hospital people thought safe. Fortunately the poor wee pig has had no pain from it, and complained during the inspection only when he said that the X-ray thing tasted funny. The root is undamaged, so as long as the patch at the end holds he should be fine until local regular dentistry resumes.
I had originally left the chipped-off fragment in its jar of milk in the fridge and set off without it, but Nicky and Amos drove it up to us when I realised I'd forgotten it a mile out of the house. I then forgot to reclaim it from the wee tray the dentist put it on after checking the join, then remembered too late to ask for it back after we left the consulting room, so it's far away by now.
