Sunset At Wharariki Beach

Wharariki Beach is located on the very top part of the north-west coast of the South Island. It is famous for its lovely rolling sand-dunes which kids can slide down and its great waves enjoyed by surfers who are happy to walk there to enjoy the water. It is a beach beloved by photographers ...if the weather and light is right!
There are two large rocky outcrops off shore named the "Archway Islands", images of which appear regularly on calendars and postcards. The light was not right for the islands last night so we settled for capturing the remains of the day towards the western end of the sweeping flat sandy beach.
It was dark by the time we made the return walk over the sand dunes, up a sandy bush track and across farmland to our vehicle. Luckily we had organised to spend the night at the Pohara Beach Motor Camp, near Takaka, in order to avoid a long triring drive back to Kaiteriteri.
