Matheran

A welcome escape from Mumbai this weekend.

Saturday morning we appeared at Victoria Teminus and got the train to Neral, for Matheran, an old British hill fort that is now a popular weekend getaway for Mumbaikers. Treated ourselves to 1st Class for 300 rupees return - we think that bought us an actual seat as opposed to standing! Eventually got to Neral station, then a minibus to the outskirts of Matheran, then from there a horse into town, as all cars are banned. Felt like a cowboy riding down the high street, high noon style.

Stayed at the 'Verandah in the Forest', a superb old colonial house that is now a quirky hotel full of character. Lunch, followed by afternoon tea, naps on the verandah, reading, dinner, wine - the perfect restful day. Walked to 'Echo Point' to catch the sunset above. What a view...
