Roches Moutonnees

The Roche moutonnee swarm at Dulnain Bridge covered in birches, bracken and heather to create a wild landscape in miniature. These fascinating rock formations were caused by the passage of ice ( a glacier) over bedrock which is smoothed on the upstream side (the stoss) and plucked to form crags on the downstream (lee)side . Their name is derived from their resemblance to the probably maloderous curly wigs slicked down with mutton tallow which worn during the 18th century.
