Launch of MV Arran at Wm Denny shipbuilders of Dumbarton. This was the first of 3 new side loading car ferries for Clyde services with Bute and Arran following quickly. 1953 was a big year for newbuilds with four new passenger motor vessels the "Maids". One of them can still be seen serving the Amalfi coast in Italy.
