On this day in history in 1968, Apollo 8 returned to Earth. On this historic flight, astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell Jr. and William Anders became the first humans to see - and photograph - the whole of the Earth from space, thus acquiring a more vast, and entirely more humbling, perspective on mankind's position amidst the immensity of space. They also became the first humans to see the dark side of the Moon.

On Christmas Eve, they sent this poignant message as they orbited the Moon.

God bless all of you, all of you on the good Earth.

Earthrise (Must see!!)
