A Wave On The Ocean

Lincoln Square.

Apologies if you saw about this on the BBC's One Show last week.

Almost hidden away from view in Manchester city centre is a statue of Abraham Lincoln.

The statue is there to commemorate the support that Manchester gave to Abraham Lincoln in the 19th century.

Many workers of Manchester's cotton mills decided to boycott using cotton from states where slave labour was still prevalent - even though many lost their jobs in the city's cotton mills as a result.

Lincoln later wrote a letter thanking those workers for their support.

This statue was erected in 1919 and is apparently a replica of a Lincoln statue in Cincinatti.
