Let the sun shine in
On sunny mornings the north-facing houses in this narrow street are emblazoned with patches of bright light. I can only assume that the windows on the opposite side cast these illuminations on to the shady walls that would otherwise not receive direct sunshine.
In trying find out whether there was a name for these light patterns I discovered that there is a town in Norway called Rjukan which lies in such a deep valley that the sun's rays don't reach it at all for six months of the year: from September to March the residents live in shadow. In 2013 an artist managed to get funding to erect three huge mirrors high above the valley to direct sunshine down on to the centre of the town thus bringing some brightness into the people's shadowy lives. (Not everyone approved, some thought it was an unnecessary gimmick and a waste of money.)
