The Redcliffe Hotel

The Redcliffe Hotel was formerly the home of Colonel Robert Smith 1787-1873, a gifted artist and architect who served in India with the Bengal Engineers. He returned to England and settled in Devon. He designed Redcliffe himself in 1852, and the Mansion was built between 1855 and 1864. The house had 23 bedrooms and was called Redcliffe Castle. The Eastern influence is very visible. When he died it passed to his son, and was sold in 1877 to the Singer trustees. It was known as Redcliffe Towers and was sold again in 1902, opening as a hotel two years later. A lovely old fashioned hotel.
