Cow Family, with Cavorting Calf!

I had my very first inkling of it on Monday, when we took the day off and it was so gorgeous out: a tiny sense of very, very early spring whispering around the edges of things.

A visit to one of the University farms early Thursday morning confirmed it. Cavorting calves! One of the first signs of spring! (OK, so it was snowing at the time - you can see some flakes in this photo - but still. It was a good sign nevertheless!)

The little fellow on the right was kicking up his/her heels in a pretty impressive display. "Crazy, crowd-pleasing steps," I thought to myself. Which of course called to mind Baz Luhrmann's excellent film, Strictly Ballroom. I've mentioned it here before. It's a wonderfully funny comedy about ballroom dancing. (OK, if you don't like ballroom dancing at all, you probably won't like it. But everybody else will!)

I am including not just one but THREE songs about dancing to accompany this scene. Take your pick!

The first, of course, is the wonderful final dance scene from Strictly Ballroom, the paso doble performed by Scott Hastings and his partner Fran, in the Pan-Pacific Grand Prix Dancing Championship.

Second is a dance with a hoedown feel, perhaps quite appropriate for this farm scene: John Michael Montgomery's fun Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident).

And third is the Kinks classic, Come Dancing.

If you watch any one of these, you will be tempted to kick up your heels like the calf in this picture! Oh, come dancing . . .
