Chestnut fencing is sustainable, chestnut being one of the easiest trees to coppice. This is fairly typical of Sussex cleft chestnut rails. Many people use chestnut uprights too, not sure if this could be oak which is even more substantial, though not as sustainable. You see this everywhere, not just fields and paddocks but gardens too. Attractive.
