Why is lead used in roof flashings?

Lead is the subject for the blipfoto this week.....

The material that is used for flashings needs to be malleable,
so that it can be formed around the different contours of the roof.
This is where lead has proven the best,
it can be formed easily into complicated shapes without tearing.
