breaking bread

After a big afternoon with my mum at the hospital dad is currently at, dinner planned with house guest P, mum and neighbours.
All off to a great start with a plate of meats, olives, figs and bread and then spectacular mushroom and truffle pasta.

Just before pudding (apple and plum country tart!), one of the smoke alarms started to 'chirp'..a not so subtle hint to replace the battery. N volunteered to climb a ladder and do the deed (high ceilings in this house) and ....yes, fell of said ladder, landing with a mighty thud and knocked out.
Just awful and a sickening experience for us all.
Two ambulances later and oxygen, neck brace and other things poked in his arm, he was thankfully able to move all limbs and walk to the ambulance that took him off for a check up.
Good news is he was released last night and bruised and battered but not broken bones (or worse).

Blimey.
What a day.
