A Work in Progress...

We woke up this morning to a power outage - which makes one immediately think of coffee and the lack thereof...but it also makes you think of heat..or again, the lack thereof. We do have a couple of electric rads in the main cottage and a heater in the cabin, but they, of course run on electricity! The only reliable source of heat is the wood fireplace in the main cottage and that depends on a reliable source of wood, all chopped and split and neatly packed on shelves behind the shed.  So far, over the decades, we have had enough dead trees on the island to ensure we always have a supply; It does need replenishing, so in some ways it was a good thing that a couple of pines had to be cut down this summer. Down they came, but now the rest of the work awaits... Thank heavens for the younger generation..and their axes.

Of course a power outage also means no running water, no cooking, no no tv, no internet, no land-line (wireless) phone..and as we rely on a booster to increase our cell signal, no reliable phone at all except an old rotary phone that my Dad , always thinking ahead, did not throw out! ( It is rather difficult though to "press 1" when you call the power company to report the outage!)  Whatever, it was a morning we could not spend on our computers...Imagine that!

The highlight of my day, though, took place before the power went out; at around 4 AM, I awoke to a very dark and clear night sky lit up by starlight and a sliver of a moon. I stumbled my way in the blackness down to the dock to take it all in...it was absolutely stunning; it was magical..A canopy of stars, so bright they were reflected in the water as if in a mirror......something we never see in the city because of all the ambient light. Of course, I tried to take a photograph and of course, it was impossible to do so....if it had been? THAT would be my blip of the day!
