Waimakariri

Busy morning at work and then a colleague and I set off at 12.30 for a weekend tramping. Off to Arthurs Pass (Klondyke Corner), then pack and boots on, and up the Waimakariri River. Destination, Carrington Hut.

Relatively fine afternoon, with not too much wind, which was perfect for a 14K walk up the river. Luckily, if that's what you might think, the river levels were very low, and in places the Waimak had gone underground, in one section for probably 4-5km. So we didn't' get wet feet until late in the day ;-)

To be honest, the walk was longer than I anticipated. Up the main valley, 1 hr, round the corner, 1 hr, then up the next valley (the one we see here) for another hour. Carrington is nestled in the bush near the confluence of the Waimak and White Rivers, underneath Mt Campbell, seen here.

Relatively early night with only 3 people at the hut. Tomorrow, onwards and up to barker Hut. Not a huge distance, but a climb and probably rougher than today.
