The church at Inveresk which stands on a prominent position above a loop in the river and overlooking both the land and sea, is nicknamed ‘The Visible Church’. It is on the site of a Roman garrison fort and became an important strategic point for armies during conflicts between the Scots and invading troops with both the Duke of Somerset in 1547 and Cromwell inn 1650 mounting their cannons there when they invaded Scotland.  A church has existed there since the 6th century with the present church replacing a medieval church in 1805. The steeple was added shortly afterwards and some modifications were made in 1893 to St Michael’s Church or Inveresk Kirk as it is usually called now. Although it looks fairly plain outside it is quite attractive inside with some beautiful stained glass, a magnificent pipe organ and an Adam-style ceiling
