Open Bible Church (Closed)

I've wanted to photograph this building for some time, but there are almost always cars parked in front of it, along with regular traffic streaming by (and/or stopping). There's a Muni stop nearby which also tends to back up traffic. Market Street was quite empty today due to the holiday, so I took the rare opportunity to photograph it.

The building has been empty since I arrived in San Francisco, so I did a web search to see if there were any plans to renovate it. I found that the church "was founded by a group of local Christian people in 1939. They remained unattached for a period of time and worshipped in a church on Laguna Street known as the San Francisco Gospel Center. On April 1, 1944, this group affiliated with the Open Bible Standard Churches, Inc., a nationally known organization with headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa., and has been known as the Open Bible Church ever since. The beautiful new edifice at 2135 Market-st was dedicated in August, 1946 and Pastor J. J. Humphries was invited to accept the pastorate in July, 1950, with the church enjoying remarkable growth since that date and about to launch a large expansion program to double its facilities. Their Sunday morning worship service is broadcast from the sanctuary each week at 11 a.m."

I'm not sure when the place closed down, but I'd hate to see the building get demolished for more expensive condos.
