Llangurig sheep

We set out for a decent walk above Llangurig, Powys on a cold, grey morning. As we climbed the first hill we encountered a field full of hungry sheep, some of them with new born lambs.

The farmer had just been on his quad bike and I think the sheep may have associated us with more feed so en masse they followed us up the side of the hill.

This is a view looking back at the forward ranks of the sheep battalion. We soon lost them as we headed higher on to paths and tracks towards Afon Elan. As we climbed the snow got deeper, the drifts got bigger and the track became more faint.

We had to traverse along the side of the valley at one point. We frequently fell into drifts to above knee height which gets tiring after some distance....

At the top, we sat down in a snowdrift and had some lunch. The Sun (yes, that golden orb we haven't seen since last May) came out and we lay back and sunbathed for a while. It was like being on a piste side verandah relaxing after a beer, some snitchzel and chips.

Then the Sun went behind a cloud and the wind picked up and it was like being on a remote hill in Wales in unseasonably low temperatures.

A walk back along more obscured tracks to the van. We were ahead of our carefully calculated schedule and could not justify running home for a warm bath so we headed down to the Elan Valley and a cup of tea below the lowest dam.

Back to the house and I achieved what I thought was impossible by falling asleep in the steam bath. Fortunately it's got a timer otherwise a nice poaching would have been in the offing.

Fish and Chips from Llani to end? Or was it Caersws which had the best fish and chips?

The snow has almost gone from the valley floor. A shame but then it is almost April!
