Maundy Thursday

Today, according to a tradition of over 700 years, the Queen presented Maundy Money to 87 "deserving" men and 87 "deserving" women, the number representing her 87 years. Each recipient was given a white purse with 87p worth of specially minted Ip, 2p, 3p and 4p with the Queen's first portrait on the reverse as well as a red purse with a £5 and a 50p coin. Until about 300 years ago the reigning monarch washed the feet of the poor and then gave them gifts of food and clothing but this was changed to money in the red purse money in lieu of the gifts.
This symbolises Jesus' act of humility by washing the disciples' feet the day before his death on Good Friday.
I of course don't have any Maundy coins so substituted them with these showing the Queen in her early reign.

I have now added the last few backdated entries.
