Leatherhead

I went to Leatherhead this morning to buy a new battery for my watch. The town was very quiet for a weekday morning, and I can’t help remembering what it was like when we came here in the 1960s. The High Street carried two way traffic and the pavements were narrow and crowded, tricky with a pram and a toddler. But look at it now! Almost deserted, and no interesting shops, just cafes and nail bars. Now, next to the High Street, is a small shopping centre with a Sainsbury’s and there were a few more people there, but the town is not thriving. So sad.
In contrast, we are lucky that our village shops are surviving and there are always plenty of people about.
