darkest before the dawn

Comes a time when the light rays originating from any given point , do not converge on the plane of the image sensor.
Does that mean there is no focus? That there is no visual point of reference to anchor the rest of the image off? That there is nothing for the eye and the mind to settle on and therefor "enjoy" the image?
That it must therefor be a pile of poo?
Dont ask me , my opinion is skewed.
