Granddaughter

The second time we’ve got together with Matt, granddaughter, the former Mrs Tryfan and Winnie the dog coming to us for lunch and a walk. We’ve not seen much of M at all for several years until the former Mrs Tryfan hit on the idea of lunch and a walk.

It’s turning out a very good idea which looks as if we’ll repeat on a regular basis now that restrictions are relaxed. As is the granddaughter, turning out very well as we’re really enjoying her company as well as that of Matt and Winnie.

She’s into crystals, of which she’s collected a fair number which she brought around to show us. They’re a mixture of minerals and rocks, some rough broken pieces like you pick up others highly polished and beautiful.

She knows the names of each one and it was a delight to be able to talk to her about the geological story behind many of the samples. I got out my own box of rock specimens that I created in 1971 for my A level geology exam and we were able to talk about my collection of rocks, minerals and fossils from Shropshire and the Cotswolds, enjoying the rude sounding Schists and Pissolithic Limestone.

One our walk we were, of course, looking for rocks. Kent is not blessed with many fascinating rocks being all rather mundane newish sedimentary rocks. However, we surprised ourselves by scavenging a goid few samples of granite and shale from various driveways that we passed by.
