Sgwarnog: In the Field

Derby

A derby match between my two most local teams provided an excuse to step into the grassroots football of the Craven & District League. The geographer in me can’t help noting that neither team is in Craven District, although its boundary is only 10-15 miles away.

Baildon Trinity Athletic (stripes) were hosting Salts 3rd team (the yellow and blue of Ukraine) at Esholt Sports Ground on the banks of the River Aire. I’ve turned up to games here a number of times, only to find things postponed or cancelled so it was a relief to see players on the pitch when I arrived.

A busy first half saw the teams trade goals, with Salts taking a 3-2 lead into the break. A fourth followed (pictured) soon into the second half, and that was that.
