Empty Kegs
This pub in St Albans is reputed to be the oldest pub in the country, originating in 793 AD. However, this year it went into administration after Covid restrictions made it unviable to continue. The pub is now closed.
At present its future seems uncertain. It is up for sale, but I can find no mention of interested buyers.
Apparently the current building dates from the 11th Century, although I understand it was moved to this site from its original location near the Abbey after the dissolution of the abbey in 1539. Supposedly there are (or were) tunnels from the beer cellar to the abbey so that the monks could enjoy a drink here. The pub used to have a cock-fighting pit (hence the name) but cock-fighting became illegal in the 19th century.
