A Wave On The Ocean

"Over The Sea"

This is St. Clements Church, in Ordsall, Salford.
The spire can be seen from quite far around, but it's way off the main road and it isn't immediately obvious how to get to it.
My flat was less than five minutes walk from this church, and over the years I photographed it from a few different perspectives.
A couple of weeks ago I found out that this small Church of England church has quite a remarkable place in history.

It's where the first Native American to be born in Europe was christened. Her tribal name was Over the Sea, and she was part of the Oglala Lakota Sioux from South Dakota. Her English name was Francis Victoria Alexander.

I didn't know any of this until someone posted a comment on one of my flickr photos of the church. I've done some research since then.

In the late 19th century, Buffalo Bill brought his touring Wild West Show to Salford. The Native Americans who were touring with him were members of the Sioux tribe.
Some of them stayed here; there are actually a few descendants of chief Charging Thunder, who married an American woman who was part of the tour.
Many left.

And this little church has a little place in history.
