New New Town

Carthage means "new town" and the Carthaginians called this town "new Carthage", Cartagena. The Romans built the theatre you can see here in 5 or 4BC. It was built over and forgotten about over the centuries of Vandals, Visigoths, Muslims and Castilians. "Luckily" the Cathedral, which was partly built on top of the theatre using some of its stones, was destroyed in the Spanish Civil War. You can see a bit of the cathedral looming over the theatre in one of the extras. Over the past few years, archeologists have uncovered much of the old building. The theatre has been sensitively restored and has a wonderful museum which contains the objects that were uncovered, such as the sculpture in the extra.

Cartagena today is a sleepy little town, but also the HQ of the Spanish Navy in the Mediterranean.
