Downy Woodpecker

We were out on the Rail Trail in Amherst late this morning, and this downy woodpecker was very close, excavating away at the hole you can see just to his left. I had never seen a woodpecker drilling at a hole for so long (ca. 20 minutes, in two sessions.

This is not my usual standard for a bird image. I was nursing a cranky shoulder so I wasn't schlepping my long lens, but amazingly I was able to get this at 5x with my Canon S100 (it's a wonderful high-end point-and-shoot). We'll try to go back in the next day or two and do better.

Edit: Congratulations to Adam Scott, who became the first Australian to wind the Masters Golf Tournament.
