School’s out … for Easter!

At two o’clock this afternoon the school term finished. The ice cream van that capitalises on the holiday treat trade was unaware of the early finish and hurtled towards the school as we walked home. The frustration evident on the vendor’s face as her end of term softees were melting and the chime went on incessantly, flouting the local bye laws.

Don’t misunderstand us. We love ice creams and children enjoying them with their parents is a delight. Our issue with this vendor is the clouds of filthy diesel fumes belching into buggy bourne lungs and excited young pupils oblivious to the dangers of the poisonous fumes. This van has to keep its ancient engine running at full throttle to keep its fridges cool.

By contrast, on Portobello Prom, Edinburgh, similar aged ice cream vans all have modern low emission, low noise generators at some distance from the prom and their happy punters ! Porty folk would not stand for anything less. Hopefully the folk round here will eventually get that message too?

T was very busy “pricking out” and “potting on” in the welcome spring sunshine this morning. These pots are totally biodegradable. Hopefully they will also keep some hungry slugs at bay too!
