Smoked Salmon

It has been a tradition, for a number of years now, for me to buy smoked salmon for Christmas by mail order from the Hebridean Smokehouse on North Uist. I have loved ringing up and ordering from a very friendly Scottish lady and then receiving the beautifully packed salmon through the post. They send me a delightful postcard of the area several times through the year. (A very clever marketing ploy to make sure I don't forget them.)

We hadn't been to North Uist for over ten years until now, so it came as a surprise to find the Smokehouse just ten minutes from our house. Even weirder was going in and buying some salmon in person, after all these years of shopping from afar. And they were very pleased to meet one of their mail-order customers.

It's a thriving company, growing from a tiny stone building to the large new premises seen here. They get orders from all over the world. And of course the smoked salmon is delicious!

You can probably tell from this picture that we have had 'weather' today. Driving rain, blustery showers, a blanket of cloud and now howling winds. We will stay in, watch the weather and enjoy smoked salmon with locally baked oatcakes.

As this was taken from the car, you can see how close to the water you often are and how narrow the roads are. The cars are in the car park, not on the road.

As an alternative blip, here are lambs sheltering from the wind, right outside the house.
