A time for everything

A great day for paddling!

Tuesday
It was a cool start to the day, but under clear skies and sunshine, it soon warmed up. With rain in the forecast off and on for the rest of the week, we thought it would be a good day to get out kayaking. We headed up to Hueston Woods State Park, about a 50 minute drive northwest from us, the far side of Oxford Ohio, where Laura went to university - so it’s always fun to go back and see what’s changed. It was obvious as we drove through that classes had finished for the year, and most of the students gone home. We had a great kayak -lots of birds to be seen, especially cormorants and great blue herons, but also swallows swooping low over the water, and a few hawks flying overhead at one point. I was hoping we might see a bald eagle since there is a nest around there, but we weren’t lucky today. There were a couple of sailboats out, having trouble with the fickle wind, which would come and go, leaving them becalmed. As we went along you would notice more and more fishermen in their boats right at the edge of the lake in the shade of the trees.we were out for a little over two hours. We stopped in Oxford on the way back and treated ourselves to an ice cream.
When we returned to the car, I turned my phone on and received the horrifying news of another mass shooting, in an elementary school this time, in a small community in Texas, killing eighteen children and three adults. How many more have to die before anything is done to change gun laws in this country?! The attitude to guns in this country sickens me and is incomprehensible to me. My heart is breaking for all those families who have lost a child, and for the families of the adults too.
