On the way home from the fortnight away we diverted to Kirby Lonsdale and walked across the magnificent three arched Devil’s Bridge above a gorge in the River Lune.  It is believed to have been built before 1370 when records suggest repairs were done and was in use by vehicles until 1932.  At the apex of the bridge there is a deep impression in the stone supposedly the devil’s handprint when he built the bridge!  According to legend an old woman who lived on the bank was trying unsuccessfully to get her cow back after it had strayed across the river when the devil appeared and offered to build a bridge in exchange for the first soul that crossed the bridge.  The woman agreed and when she met him by the bridge she told him that she would fulfil her promise whereupon she took a bun from her bag and her little dog ran across to get it.  The devil was furious to be outwitted.
It is a popular place for travellers to rest with their wagons after visiting the Horse Fair at Appleby and for bikers.
