Heads And Tails

My title is the lovely 1970s children's programme about domestic and wild animals with Derek Griffiths. My children used to love it and my aviation-mad son loved that Derek used to own and fly a Stampe plane.

Another oppressively hot day. We couldn't find my friend the willow emerald damselfly on our morning walk but caught up with him after lunch when it got a bit cooler. He was on one of his favourite perches, a hogweed stem. My image shows the tip of his tail with his special claspers. These fit exactly into grooves behind the female's head when he grabs her for mating.
