Small Red-eyed Damselfly

After a greyish start it turned warm and sunny for our survey visit to a local disused gravel pit. While many of the species recorded were typical of similar pits along the Welland valley, there were some nice finds, including a small population of Red-eyed Damselfly, massively outnumbered by the photobombing Common Blue damselfly, and the first record of Inland Club-rush in Northamptonshire. This species looks very like Sea Club-rush and was only relatively recently recognised as occurring in the UK - to confirm its identity required microscopic examination to count the number of perianth bristle!
