tempus fugit

Autumn awakenings

Come September here in the northern hemisphere mammalian brains wind down into early evenings, winter woollies, hibernation and heating bills.

For fungi though it's a fresh start: damp and cool, time for their mycelia to feed and stretch out filaments that will erupt into spore-bearing fruiting bodies (aka mushrooms and toadstools).

And fun for folk such as me to spot them, admire them and maybe eat them - although not this one which would be hard and leathery even when new.
