Baker’s Dozen Debating Club

Today was a special .anniversary

It is 80 years since a group of 13 Arnside and Silverdale elderly men met in the Bakery coffee shop on Arnside Promenade and began to put the world to rights.
So in 1942 they formed the Baker’s Dozen Village Debating Club. The amazing thing is that it still meets fortnightly for vigorous and stimulating discussions.

Nowadays we meet in our respective houses and there are just eight of us.
We take it in turns to choose and introduce a subject for discussion and we have no difficulty in filling an hour and a half with our debates

The original constitution of the club stated:

“We meet together in mutual regard and gracious fellowship to discuss the affairs of the universe.”

So today was a celebration lunch for Club’s 80 th. Birthday.

For any of my followers who are wondering, Knottman is nearest left and the  waitress kindly took the photo on my behalf.

My calculation is that over 80 years the members have discussed about 1600 topics. Some of them several times. Given the present state of the world there is morethan ever to discuss and to try to understand.
