Marine Academy
We were privileged today to visit the South Devon College Marine Academy. We went there with the Torquay Civic Society to see the wonderful facilities for training for marine and nautical careers. The site itself is also being developed and will in due course have a hotel, an extensive marina, and private housing, all on an idyllic site on the edge of the river Dart. The Academy is an approved training centre for The Royal Yachting Association (RYA), and works in partnership with Princess Yachts to deliver a range of apprenticeship opportunities. The partnership has also provided a dedicated workshop that houses one of Princess’ V40 hulls, allowing students to learn in the classroom using real-world products, techniques, and application of theory. Students are called learners, and can study boatbuilding, navigation, marine engineering, marine fishing. They have access to top class facilities, workshops, class rooms and training space on the water’s edge.the photo is one of the workshops.
