Hertfordshire puddingstone in Sarratt

Today we went to the village of Sarratt in Hertfordshire to meet friends in a pub for lunch. As we took our dog Libby I went for a walk on the village green first and came across this WW2 war memorial. The little plaque on the top says that this big lump of rock is Puddingstone….something I had previously not heard of. Having looked it up it seems it is local to Hertfordshire. It is a conglomerate of rounded flint and other pebbles in a sandy matrix and is called puddingstone or plum pudding stone as it was thought to resemble a Christmas pudding? Not sure why there are some coins on the top.

We had a lovely lunch with the best welcome and service we have had in a pub for quite a while. We had a super little room with a nice round table, away from the main bar so not noisy.
There was more disruption on the M25 today but luckily we managed to avoid it and our journey was quite straightforward except for more heavy downpours on and off all day.
