Dakar
Regular followers of this journal will know that we have been trying to crowd-blip photographs of all the places mentioned in Lorna Lloyd's Diary of the war (previously blipped in full in the LornaL journal).
Since July 13th 2022, thirty blippers have kindly 'donated' 54 shots to represent locations from around the world. We have another 40 left in our list (see below). We are pleased to be over halfway there in our mission.
We are aware, however, that many of the places left to collect are going to be 'tricky', especially those that few blippers have ever visited. This means that we need to be imaginative in covering some of the remaining locations.
We have already bent the rules a little for the River Marne. Today we are doing something similar for Dakar in Senegal. The photograph depicts the Senegalese flag from the television at the start of the England-Senegal football match this evening. In the foreground on a laptop on a coffee table in front of the television is a page from the Internet that shows young men playing football in Dakar. This blip links to Lorna's diary entry of September 24th 1940, which features in Episode 7 of our podcast series. hazelh supplied this shot - thank you!
We are hopeful that the blipfoto community has the talents to come up with other inspired means of representing the hard-to-source places in our list below. For example: perhaps someone has in their archive a photograph of the painting of Guernica from a trip to Madrid; someone else may have a souvenir from a child's school trip to the World War I battlefields that could be photographed to represent Bailleul; a photograph of a Christmas card that depicts the nativity scene would do for the Middle East; keen gardener blippers could send photographs of plants native to any of the places listed. One way or another, we do hope that we will be able to complete our collection!
Of course, some of the places should be relatively easy to source. For example, there must be several UK blippers who could send us shots of Bolton, Coventry, Gloucester, and Ilford? Surely? Please?
Please send your contribution(s) to h.hall@napier.ac.uk and we will feature it(them) alongside the others that we have been blipping here since 13th July 2022. We will also add your name to our blipper credits list below. Thank you!
