The Artist's Hand

The artist is none other than Blipfoto's own Artist Annie, on the right in this trio, who was among the local artists painting in Big Rock Garden Park this afternoon at the park's annual free Mother's Day celebration.

There is a permanent collection of 36 outdoor sculptures ensconced in the park's 2.5 acres, and an additional 35 sculptures were brought in a few days ago for Big Rock Garden's latest exhibit. Among them was the large work that Ann is seen painting here -- "Unity," a 14-ton sculpture created by by Russ Beardsley and Cameron Scott. It was my favorite of all the works I saw today, and I loved Ann's interpretation of "Unity," as well.

In addition to the local artists throughout the grounds, creating art right before our eyes, and the park's beautiful trees, blooming shrubs, and winding paths, there were also poetry readings by poets from the Whatcom Poetry Series, a Celtic harpist playing wonderful music, and refreshments available.

There were many families there, with mothers of all ages enjoying their special day, and how wonderful that everything was free! This was our first visit to Big Rock Garden Park, but it won't be the last -- the park is open from dawn to dusk, all year round.
