Wandering

Started sunny but most of the day we were under pretty thick cloud so we decided to head into town for a wander. We started with breakfast at Room & Rumours (the mushrooms on toast for K and a cinnamon bun for me) before having a good look around City Art Centre, where there was an interesting exhibition of women photographers from the early 20th century. Particularly struck by the American woman who spent six years in the Outer Hebrides recording what looked to be a very hard life lived by the women there, and by a woman who was making a film about young children being evacuated to Canada from the UK in the 2nd World War who died with them when their boat was torpedoed.
These anti-suffragette postcards were something else….! Also looked at an exhibition of photos of the insides of lots of shops and workshops around Edinburgh in times gone by…fascinating, especially since many were taken near where I live now and it would be interesting to know which shops they were now. We did manage to spot the windows of a tea room (now part of the Balmoral hotel) after we left the exhibition.
Had a browse around the town showing K what’s changed since she was last here, then into the National Gallery to look at the latest temporary exhibition of watercolour painting society…some lovely ones…and at the permanent exhibition. I had to pop to see my favourite Velasquez of the woman cooking eggs, and K went to see her pre-Raphaelites (extra).
More wandering down to Grassmarket and I managed to get a bargain necklace from Sahara…but will need to go back for the other one I liked when their next sale is on!
Cup of tea and a shared sandwich before we bought things for supper tomorrow and went home for a bit of rest time. K introduced me to Ted Lasso which I can see I’ll get hooked on!
We weren’t hungry so decided to eat after the theatre (although still weren’t hungry then!) and enjoyed ‘Macbeth (an undoing)’….which was a very clever feminist twisting of the original, whilst keeping most of the original lines but switching characters and adding new lines (extra). Very clever staging, well acted, brilliantly written and with buckets of blood. A good evening, only spoiled by not being able to find a parking space when we got back. Will need to be up early to move it in the morning!
