The Kiltwalk

Oor Wullie, Oor Brodie, Oor Summer Oor Inspiration

If you're taking part in Oor very first Edinburgh Kiltwalk the morra you'll be proudly wearing one of Oor fantastic Kiltwalk t-shirts emblazoned with Oor Wullie on the front of it.

Oor Wullie, courtesy of the Sunday Post, has been leading The Kiltwalk's charge to raise £1million pounds for Scotland's Children and after our first event of 2013, which was Hampden to Loch Lomond, we're hopeful that we'll have raised around half of that million already, which is beyond our wildest dreams.

If Edinburgh delivers sponsorship at a similar rate, we could be three quarters of the way there after two of our five events. So come on Edinburgh let's raise that cash.

Sunday's Kiltwalk will start with Oor Pipers leading us all out of Murrayfield Stadium and in front of them will be the two beautiful kids Brodie and Summer Wroniecki, pictured above, along with Scottish Rugby legend Chris Paterson.

We first met the Wroniecki family last year when they launched Kiltwalk Team Summer, whose aim was to raise as much money as they could for The Kiltwalk and the Sick Kids Friends Foundation, a registered Charity set up in 1992 to support the work of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.

You see Summer was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour on her 3rd birthday, which was removed back in September 2011 and her diagnosis, treatment and care was carried out at both Ninewells Hospital and the Sick Kids Hospital in Edinburgh.

It was the latter where Summer spent most of her time and the skill and dedication of the medical staff ensured Summer was going to be given every chance to beat the disease. During this time the family were supported by the Sick Kids Friends Foundation and it was their work that inspired them to raise what they could for such a worthy and supportive charity.

Having decided to take part in a 26 mile Kiltwalk, Karen and Chris were astounded at the support provided by family and friends who all signed up to take part, however it was the generosity of everyone who helped raise £37,000 that completely blew them and to be honest us, away.

£16,500 of the money raised went to the Sick Kids Friends Foundation and the picture in today's Blipfoto was taken last September when Team Summer and The Kiltwalk turned up on what was Summers 4th birthday, to present the cheque.

When we post a picture like todays I'm sure some read with trepidation, as they wonder where the story ends, however in this case it doesn't, in fact what has happened is quite remarkable.

You see Summer and her brother Brodie "are the reason" why Sick Kids are a Charity Partner of the Kiltwalk, and in many ways the inspiration behind the Edinburgh Kiltwalk itself. By introducing the Sick Kids Friends Foundation to The Kiltwalk last year, we realised we just had to bring The Kiltwalk to our nation's capital.

This in turn means that like the Rolling Stones, Team Summer have been patched up and put back together so they can do it all over again in 2013.

What about Oor Summer? Well Summer continues to be in remission and going from strength to strength and with that cheeky smile, her Dad's going to have his hands full in years to come and we know who the winner will be.

Finally a note to Oor Kiltwalkers. Edinburgh looks like a tough course and I'm sure there will be times when you feel like you just can't continue.

When that time comes, and it will, keep a look out for Oor Kiltwalk signs, as there will be some very special Bairns like Aila, Cora and Jordan, who will never walk a Kiltwalk urging you on. So when you feel the wind whisper in your ear and your spirits lifting for some unknown reason, you'll know it's the spirit of one of Oor very special Kiltwalk Fairies urging you on, whispering "you can do it", before they fly off again. They're maigical.

Good luck to everyone and look forward to seeing you at the finish line.
