Siegestor

Today's object of interest is Siegestor (Victory Gate). This triumphal arch was completed in 1852 to glorify the Bavarian Army. On the front side (the one you see in the blip) it is written: "Dedicated to the Bavarian Army". Today it is a symbol of the contrary - a reminder to peace. After it took heavy damage during World War II it was rebuilt and a sentence on the back side was added: Dem Sieg geweiht, vom Krieg zerstört, zum Frieden mahnend ("Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war, reminding of peace"). On top of the arch stands a statue of Bavaria with a quadriga of lions.
