A mine sweeper

This is Gilbert, Mistress Talpa's paternal grandfather. In 1914 he joined the Royal Navy and spent the war on a mine sweeper. In the extra he is in his white tropical uniform. In July 1918 he was injured and honourably discharged. That didn't stop him serving again in the Second World War!
