Bucket List

One of those perfect days, and now it's late, and so much I could say, plus took over a hundred photos...

I used to buy guide books and know exactly what I wanted to do in a place, but not this time - just wandered and looked at the map and tried to remember the book we read. Walked into some incredibly beautiful churches - especially the Orthodox one. Saw the Roman ampitheatre and then wandered up through an old neighbourhood (extra) with streets so narrow Mike could touch both sides at once, up to the San Giusto Castle, views of the whole city and the limestone escarpment behind, and the sea beyond. Mike was intrigued by a huge sailing ship (extra) and found out it belongs to a Russian and was confiscated by Italy last year. I was thrilled to see snow covered peaks in the distance - the western Alps. Another extra shows the mixed nationalities here, including lots of (richer) Ukrainian refugees - this place has always been a refuge for all sorts of peoples.

Anyway, wandered back down to the coast just as a boat docked - realised it was a ferry, and decided to get on - took us to Muggia, a small fishing village on the far eastern side of the bay, and this is where the bucket list comes in - you have to come to Trieste and get that ferry, and sit in the sunshine having an aperol spritz (or a beer) in the small piazza behind the church (extra), and then go to the gelateria overlooking the boats and buildings in my main, and buy a cone with at least two flavours of the delicious homemade gelato, served with gusto by the big, friendly guy who makes them, hard to choose, but mine were coffee and white chocolate, then sit in the sunshine eating them to await the ferry back to Trieste - 8,65euros return, 30mins each way.

Gratefuls:
- Julia, Tom, and Eden safely in Fortaleza with our friends, having a great time
- a great companion, happy for serendipity to happen
- gelato; whoever invented it is my hero!
