Anzac

Our neighbour baked Anzac biscuits. Today is Anzac Day, when Australia and New Zealand commemorate the lives of those who have died in war. Originally the anniversary of the Anzacs’ landing on Gallipoli in 1915, the commemoration has since widened to include two World Wars, Vietnam and, sadly, a growing list of more recent wars.

Anzac biscuits first appeared during or soon after World War 1. They use ingredients that stay fresh for a long time, like rolled oats, flour and treacle, and are said to be based on the kind of foodstuffs that could be included in food parcels from home.
