A day in the country

Another dull day today, with rain forecast for mid-afternoon. My brother and I, together with my nephew, set off for a drive around Surrey to visit some interesting places.

First stop was Sheepleas Nature Reserve near West Horsley, where we walked in the woods and meadows and saw many beautiful cowslips.

After lunch in the 'Snooty Fox' in Shalford we went on to the site of the Gunpowder Works in the Tillingbourne Valley near Chilworth, first established in 1626 and in business for nearly three hundred years! Loads of ruins, mill wheels and all sorts of historic artifacts - quite amazing!

Finally, and as it began to rain, we drove up the hill to Guildford Cathedral, a 'modern' cathedral on the top of Stag Hill, begun in 1936, held up  by the war and finally finished and consecrated in 1961.

An interesting day - we finished it off with a visit to my brother's other son and family and arrived back in time for dinner!
