The Patch

I have been trying to weld this piece of cast iron for ages with about an 85% success rate. I am very worried about it cracking again when the stove is restored and assembled so I came up with a solution.

I made a patch out of 2mm steel sheet and drilled holes in the plate and the cast iron. Then I filled the space between the plate and the cast iron with heat proof silicone. This is to allow for expansion and contraction when the stove heats up.

Tomorrow night when I get home from work I will tighten the bolts and give it all a coat of heat proof paint.

The restoration is coming along fast now thanks to a big effort this weekend. Of course there is no need to rush.
