Physic Well

Here is the Physic Well in Corstorphine, which I blipped after work.

The well was highly reputed in the eighteenth century, so much so that a coach ran 8-9 times each weekday from Edinburgh. The well was to the west of the High Street, on what is now Dunsmuir, and houses were built to accommodate those who came for a course of the waters.

The well lost its popularity in the mid- to late 1700s, and by 1790 it had "been in total disrepute and disuse for a number of years," and when the Stank Burn (a drainage ditch) was widened and deepened the water lost its medicinal qualities altogether."

Hope everyone has had a good start to the week.
