Songs of the People

A quick entry tonight. Hurrah! The highlight of the day was seeing and listening to Show of Hands with Michael Wood and Kirstie Merryn at the Gulbenkian Theatre at the University of Canterbury.

We’ve seen Show of Hands dozens of times: this was a departure from their usual style. The history of England through folk music with its context narrated by Michael Wood.

A quite marvellous evening’s entertainment, thought provoking both positive and negative. Positive because it showed how our freedoms today were hard won by our ancestors who were harried, murdered and pilloried at every turn.

An negative because there’s still so much to do and those hard won freedoms are more at risk today than they ever have been.
